Les différentes étapes d’une reconstruction par le lambeau du muscle grand dorsal :
“When I found out, I packed my stuff as if I was going to die. »
« But you must move forward. I’d like to say that we keep on going when we lose something. What we really do is find something else instead. »
Geraldine decided to go through breast surgery in September 2016. How do the body and the mind deal with successive physiological transformations? (First, there is the breast removal. Following this, there is the breast reconstruction.
It is a slow and painful process. The substituted breasts will never fully replace the ones that used to be there. This series depicts the various steps of reconstruction whilst capturing Géraldine’s corresponding psychological and emotional states. Here are the different steps of the reconstruction through the use of the Latissimus Dorsi’s flap.
Step 1: This technique through the use of a thin and extensive back muscle. The muscle and a skin paddle are shifted to the thorax area.
Step 2: A mammal augmentation and/or a mammal balancing is performed if needed.
Step 3: The areola and the nipple are remodelled.
RESILIENCE AND CHOICE(S)
Breast reconstruction is illusorily fantasised as an inevitably straightforward and obvious solution to quickly fix, forget and reclaim our life.
Breast reconstruction is something everybody implicitely expects.
Advertising, media, fashion and other influential industries based on ‘image’ convey a message, whether it be consciously or subconsciously, that a woman is a woman only if she has boobs. It is even better if she has “nice” boobs.
Surgery should always be taken seriously. It is a brave choice which involves deep emotional and physical changes. Géraldine made her choice with a desire to reclaim her figure, to fit in her clothes, to feel like a woman again. Actually, more than she ever felt like.
