In 2012 Delphine gives birth to Leny. Three months later she is diagnosed with a stage 3 breast cancer. After genetic research, a mutation of the BRCA1 gene is found. This means that there is a high chance of Delphine developing breast and/or ovary cancer. for Delphine to develop a breast or/and an ovary cancer. In February 2015, Delphine decides to have preventative mastectomy surgery on her remaining breast. Following this, she chooses to have reconstructive surgery. This involves inserting two breast implants underneath her pectoral muscles. In October 2015, she has her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
Leny’s childhood was affected by his Mother’s illness. Leny bore witness to Delphine’s repeated absences and drowsiness throughout her treatment. She tells me how, trying to make up time, she took Leny to the swimming pool for the first time. He was four years old.
BODY LANGUAGE – AQUA-IMMERSION
Everyone has a peculiar connection to his own body. We all possess it our own way; which is why our relation to it is so special. Our (hi)story as well as our social and psychological backgrounds are some elements that influence our perception of reality. Water allows the sense of touch to take over the sight and the ear. When one’s body is swathed in water, the primitive memory of one’s state as a foetus is induced.
In water, the prints of our first childhood, our first connection to someone else’s body – our mother’s – appear. I focus on the mother and child relationship and intend to explore what gravitate around it
HOW EYES CAN CRUCIFY
They look like jelly fish. The implants evoke the other’s oppressing eye. We use the eye as a mirror, identifying ourselves with the reflection it sends back at us. Implants are a reflection of one’s decision to go through physical reconstruction. By displaying them, by showing to people something they cannot otherwise see, you take position and fully accept your femininity. It is provocative and aims to jostle those who perceive a women’s body through a lens of socially constructed perfection.
